Srinagar, Apr 02: Authorities have intensified restoration and development efforts at Dal and Nigeen lakes with a Rs 1,000 crore initiative focused on ecological revival and tourism enhancement.

The plan combines scientific interventions with visitor-focused attractions. Six aerators are already operational to improve dissolved oxygen levels and overall water quality. Tourism-centric features, including jet fountains and a Ferris wheel, are proposed to boost the lakes’ appeal while adhering to environmental safeguards.

Separately, a Rs 212 crore proposal under the Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP) targets park beautification, improved lake connectivity, and upgraded civic amenities across 58 surrounding hamlets. IIT Roorkee is providing technical support, with final approval pending.

A consultant has been engaged to design a signature tourist attraction inspired by international models, including gravity-based rides, aerial, and “dancing” fountain systems to enhance both aesthetics and aeration.

Superintending Engineer LCMA, Dr Muzamil Rafique, said the works focus on improving water quality while developing sustainable tourism infrastructure. The initiatives are expected to strengthen local livelihoods, improve lake ecology, and reinforce Srinagar’s status as a premier eco-tourism destination.
