Srinagar, Nov 30: In a significant move to fulfill a key electoral promise, the newly formed Omar Abdullah-led National Conference government in Jammu and Kashmir is likely to introduce 200 free electricity units in its first-ever budget. Sources have confirmed that the government is preparing for its maiden budget session, with a clear focus on people-friendly initiatives, making free electricity a cornerstone of its economic agenda.
The upcoming budget, expected to be presented after January 15, will not only address pressing infrastructure gaps but also introduce youth-centric employment opportunities and women-focused welfare measures. “Provisions are being made to ensure the overall development of the Union Territory while creating a more inclusive economy,” a source close to the preparations told Rising Kashmir.
Women-centric initiatives, such as monthly relief for economically disadvantaged women, distribution of free LPG cylinders, and annual ration provisions, are also expected to feature prominently in the budget. Furthermore, youth empowerment remains a priority, with employment packages and other initiatives designed to open new avenues for the younger population.
With preparations for the budget already in full swing, the government is working on finalizing proposals, and a week-long budget session is expected to be held after mid-January.
Pertinently, on November 5, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha in his address to the J&K assembly had announced 200 units of free electricity to the deserving families.
“The government is committed to providing 100 units of free electricity to deserving households, and modalities for this initiative are currently being worked out,” said Lieutenant Governor Sinha.
