Moral uprightness is a fundamental aspect of Islam that is emphasized in both the Quran and Sunnah. The Quran describes the Holy Prophet (SAW) as the best example of moral excellence, stating that he was sent to humanity as a mercy to all the worlds. Furthermore, the Quran states that the companions of the Holy Prophet (SAW) were also symbols of moral uprightness and that their behavior should serve as a model for all Muslims. The Sunnah of the beloved Prophet (SAW) provides a detailed account of his teachings and actions, which serve as a guide for Muslims to follow in their daily lives. The Holy Prophet (SAW) emphasized the importance of moral uprightness in all aspects of life, including personal conduct, business dealings, and relationships with others. One of the key principles of moral uprightness in Islam is the concept of taqwa, which can be translated as “God-consciousness” or “piety.” Taqwa involves being mindful of God in all aspects of one’s life and striving to please Him through good deeds and righteous behavior. The Quran describes taqwa as the highest form of moral excellence, stating that “the most honorable of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous” (Quran 49:13). Another important aspect of moral uprightness is the concept of ihsan, which can be translated as “excellence” or “perfection.” Ihsan involves striving for excellence in all aspects of one’s life, including personal conduct, relationships with others, and worship of God. The Prophet (SAW) described ihsan as “worshipping Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then indeed He sees you.” The Quran and Sunnah also emphasize the importance of honesty and integrity in all aspects of life. Muslims are encouraged to be truthful in their speech and dealings with others, and to fulfill their obligations and promises. Holy Prophet (SAW) famously said, “The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is entrusted, he betrays the trust.” Also, Islam emphasizes the importance of compassion and kindness towards others, especially the less fortunate. Muslims are encouraged to be generous in their dealings with others and to treat all people with kindness and respect. The Holy Prophet (SAW) said, “None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” The need of the hour is to be God-conscious, to strive for excellence in all aspects of their lives, to be honest and truthful in all dealings with others, and to show compassion and kindness towards all people. By following these principles, we all can cultivate a strong sense of moral uprightness and serve as examples of righteousness and compassion to others.
