Srinagar, Sep 4: Commissioner Secretary to the Government, Housing and Urban Development Department (HUDD), Mandeep Kaur, visited the Flood Monitoring Centre at Ram Munshi Bagh late on Wednesday evening, to review preparedness in view of the rising water levels in the River Jhelum and its tributaries.
As per a statement issued here, during the visit, the Commissioner Secretary was briefed about the latest water level readings at Ram Munshi Bagh and other vulnerable locations along the Jhelum. Mandeep Kaur directed the Vice-Chairman, LCMA, to alert Dal dwellers to be ready for immediate evacuation in view of the rising flood levels and the need to open the gates, which will result in inundation of their land. She underlined that timely dissemination of information and a swift response mechanism are vital to preventing loss of life and property. On September 4, Kaur, carried out an extensive tour of flood alert areas, with a special focus on Zinpora, Pulwama, and Tengan, Budgam, on the periphery of district Srinagar where a bund breach had occurred, to assess the prevailing flood situation.
The Commissioner Secretary was accompanied by Faz Lul Haseeb, Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), along with other senior officers. During the visit to the location where the breach happened, she reviewed water levels at critical points and also interacted with landowners whose land was inundated after the breach. The Commissioner, SMC, briefed the Commissioner Secretary on the measures being undertaken by the Corporation, including the deployment of men and machinery at vulnerable points to tackle waterlogging. Reiterating the Government’s commitment, the Commissioner Secretary assured that all necessary support would be extended and that the situation would continue to be closely monitored to ensure public safety.
