Srinagar, July 19: In a heartwarming celebration of youth development and water safety, over 36 youngsters were awarded certificates and mementoes Saturday after successfully completing a basic swimming course at the scenic Water Sports Centre, Nigeen. The felicitation ceremony was led by Deputy Labour Commissioner (Central), Masrat Hashim.According to a statement issued here, the event formed part of a 100-day swimming initiative, spearheaded by the Swim N Survival Society–K in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, Kashmir. Running from May to September, the programme aims to introduce non-swimmers—especially children—to fundamental swimming skills, instilling in them a crucial life-saving ability and boosting their confidence. Each morning, children from across the region, often accompanied by their parents, gather at the centre. Their enthusiasm has transformed the calm waters of Nigeen Lake into a vibrant hub of learning and personal growth. Speaking at the event, Masrat Hashim lauded the participants’ dedication, stressing that swimming is not just a sport but an essential life skill, particularly for communities living near water bodies. He also reflected on his earlier association with the Society during his tenure in the Tourism Department and commended its sustained efforts. Also in attendance was Shahzada Kabir Matoo, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Anti-Corruption Bureau, who highlighted the critical need for public swimming facilities. “In the absence of proper infrastructure, many youngsters risk their lives swimming in rivers and lakes unsupervised. We’ve witnessed tragic accidents in places like Gandibal and Gantmulla, underscoring the urgency of formal training,” he said. Dr Manzoor Ahmad Wani, Consultant Interventional Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, provided a holistic perspective on the importance of swimming. Citing Islamic teachings, he encouraged youth to adopt swimming not only for physical fitness but also for spiritual and mental well-being. Prominent figures present included Shakeel Ahmad, President of the Swim N Survival Society–K, Yasir Makhdoomi, Secretary of the Society and Riyaz Ahmad, a respected mentor in swimming and cycling. The success of the training programme was made possible through the dedication of a committed team of coaches and volunteers—Mudasir Chasti, Mohammad Faaliq Najar, Rayees Naqashbandi, Sheikh Rashid, Owais Rashid, Moonis Majid and others—who provided safe, hands-on guidance throughout the camp.
