A leopard that had been posing a threat to the lives of people and livestock in the Varmul Heights, Chinad and Delina areas of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district has been captured alive, according to officials.

A wildlife Department official said that the leopard was captured after the department received a call about its presence in the Varmul Heights colony, Delina and Chinad areas of Baramulla.

“We had received visual proof about the presence of leopard in the area. Soon after getting the information, we had laid traps at various positions and today the leopard was captured without causing any damage or injury to anyone,” he said.

He said that the leopard was hiding in the area from last several months.

Officials said that the leopard was earlier roaming in residential areas of Varmul Heights, Chinad and Delina area of Baramulla posing a threat to the lives of people and their livestock.

The locals of the area have applauded the efforts of wildlife department.

“Last week two leopards were seen roaming in the area. CCTV camera caught the leopards roaming in the area during the night hours which led to scare in the area,” Peer Farooq, a local of Varmul Heights said.

He said that just a night before, the leopard had entered his premises again.

“Lastly six months before one stayed for quite half an hour on our outhouse Hut,” he added.

He appealed the authorities to put the cages in the area so that the other leopards are also caught.
