The mesmerizing area of Keran in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district has recently emerged as a new destination on the itineraries of travelers and tourists. This picturesque area, strategically located on the banks of the Kishenganga river and near the Line of Control, has become a focal point of the government’s efforts to promote peace and development in the border areas.

Keran’s historical significance adds to its allure, with local lore attributing its establishment to Raja Karn in the tenth century. Its unique location, with an adjacent habitation on the Pakistani side also known as Keran, enhances the mystique of this captivating destination. The natural border formed by the river not only adds to its beauty but also fosters moments of connection as people from both sides wave at one another across the banks.

Keran is a treasure trove of natural beauty, surrounded by dense forests, meandering streams, and majestic mountains. The landscape is adorned with pine and walnut trees, creating a serene ambiance that attracts nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.

The rich biodiversity of Keran makes it an ideal destination for those seeking to reconnect with nature.

Unlike the early 1990s, Keran has undergone a transforming shift and has now become a tranquil and serene location that beckons tourists with its breathtaking vistas and warm hospitality.

To reach this idyllic valley, travelers embark on a thrilling journey through the Firkiyan Gali, an awe-inspiring mountain pass situated at an impressive altitude of 9634 feet. The panoramic 360-degree view from Firkiyan top leaves visitors spellbound, offering a glimpse of lush green forests, meadows, streams, and the distinctive wooden houses that add to the village’s rustic charm.

The Government’s recent decision to promote tourism in the border area has facilitated travel to Keran. Travelers can easily obtain permits through the official online portal without the need for personal visits to the District Magistrate’s office. Additionally, offline passes are available at the Kralpora police station, and it is essential for travelers to carry their Aadhar card and driving license if they plan to use their own vehicles.

The journey to Keran offers a delightful drive on mostly well-maintained roads, with a few yet to be macadamized stretches that only add to the allure of the scenic surroundings. The route is covered by dense forests on both sides providing the visitors with a view of real Kashmir.

En route to the village, travelers can savor local delights such as Namkeen Chai and Makki ki Roti amidst the breathtaking pine trees and stunning vistas. For those who prefer not to drive, numerous vehicle rental options are available in Kupwara and Kralpora markets.

Keran’s accommodations cater to different preferences, ranging from home-stay facilities and camping tents, all equipped with essential amenities. The locals, known for their warmth and hospitality, extend a friendly welcome to visitors, offering several home stay options to choose from.

As Keran emerges as a popular tourist destination, the government has actively invested in initiatives to enhance the visitor experience. Efforts such as installing dustbins, macadamizing untarred patches, providing medical services, and establishing selfie points need to be implemented to ensure a hassle-free and enjoyable trip for tourists.

As travelers embark on this exciting journey, a sincere reminder to be responsible tourists echoes throughout the valley. Preserving the pristine environment and natural beauty is a collective responsibility, urging visitors not to use or discard plastic bags during their stay.

A trip to Keran promises not just a treat to the eyes but also a deep immersion into a history and culture that has withstood the test of time. So, pack your bags and set forth on an unforgettable journey to this enchanting paradise nestled in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir.
