Kargil, Aug 03: A severe landslide early this morning in the Kabaddi Nallah area of Kargil district led to the collapse of a residential house, injuring at least 12 people.
The landslide, which occurred around 3:45 a.m., was triggered by ongoing land excavation for construction.
The Indian Army, UTDRF, and local volunteers from Al Reza JUIAK Ladakh and Baseej e Imam IKMT responded quickly. They successfully rescued all five individuals trapped in the rubble and transported them to the district hospital in Kargil. The injured are reported to be safe and receiving medical treatment.
To facilitate rescue operations, traffic on the National Highway has been rerouted to a bypass. The collapse, near Kargil’s main market, has caused significant disruption in the area.
Senior officials, including CEC LAHDC Kargil Dr. Jaffar Akhon, DC Shrikant Bala Shib, and SSP Kargil, visited the site to oversee the efforts. DC Kargil described the incident as a major system failure and announced the formation of a high-level committee to investigate the collapse, pledging serious action against those found responsible.
The joint rescue operation, led by SSP Kargil, included the Ladakh Police/UTDRF, Revenue Department, 121 Brigade of the Indian Army, MC Kargil, Health Department Kargil, and volunteers from Al-Reza Health Care & Research Foundation Kargil, Ladakh (ISK), and Baseej e Iman (IKMT). This coordinated effort ensured the safe evacuation of all injured individuals.
Chairman/CEC LAHDC Kargil Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhone, Deputy Commissioner Shrikant Suse, and Senior Superintendent of Police Kargil visited the site to assess the situation and later checked on the injured at the District Hospital, directing comprehensive medical care for them.
An inquiry has been ordered by DM Kargil, to be conducted by the Assistant Commissioner Revenue (ACR) Kargil. An FIR has been registered by PS Kargil under FIR no. 31 U/S 125(a) BNS, with investigations ongoing. The District Administration is in constant contact with the injured, providing relief through the Red Cross Society.
Strict directives have been issued to MC Kargil and the Revenue Department to monitor vulnerable areas to prevent future incidents.
