Srinagar, Jan 29: In a major move to modernize its communication infrastructure, the Jammu and Kashmir Police is set to acquire 560 APCO-25 handheld radios and 87 APCO-25 mobile radios, with tenders already issued for the procurement. This initiative aligns with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) guidelines and is part of a broader strategy to upgrade the police force’s operational capabilities.
The procurement of these advanced radio systems is crucial for boosting communication efficiency and enhancing coordination among various police units and agencies during operations, including anti-terror and counter-insurgency efforts. With advanced encryption and security features, the APCO-25 systems are designed to ensure secure, tamper-proof communication, particularly in high-stakes situations.
The police officer said apart from anti-terror operations, these sets will ensure seamless communication among various units and agencies, will bolster the police force’s ability to coordinate effectively during critical missions, emergency responses, and routine operations.
“One of the most significant benefits of these radios is their advanced encryption and security features. These devices provide robust safeguards against interception or tampering, thereby protecting sensitive information,” the official said.
He further said that this is particularly crucial for counter-insurgency and anti-terror operations, where secure communication can mean the difference between mission success and failure.
“Incorporating the APCO-25 systems is also a step toward aligning with global standards for public safety communication. This not only modernises the J&K Police but also positions the force to integrate seamlessly with national-level networks and systems in the future,” the official added.
Meanwhile, the police have documented the procurement numbers for these sets as B/5616965 for the APCO-25 Handheld Radios and B/5616961 for the APCO-25 Mobile Radios.
Earlier this month Police also planned for procurement of advanced Door Frame Metal Detectors (DFMDs) as part of their ongoing efforts to bolster security measures in the region.
This initiative aims to counteract rising security threats and improve the efficiency of security checks at sensitive locations, officials said.
In 2024 also, police acquire advanced bomb squad vehicles, bullet-resistant light motor vehicles (LMVs), and other state-of-the-art equipment to modernise their operational capabilities.
In October 2022, the J&K government constituted a 6-member Union Territory level Empowered Committee headed by Financial Commissioner (ACS) Home for “deliberating upon modernization plan of Jammu and Kashmir Police under the scheme Assistance to States or UTs and approving it for submission to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Government of India.
