Jammu, Feb 25: In a major enforcement action against tax evasion, the Jammu and Kashmir State Taxes Department (STD) conducted simultaneous search and seizure operations at multiple locations across the Jammu division.
The drive aimed to curb the illegal practice of converting Business-to-Consumer (B2C) invoices into Business-to-Business (B2B) invoices, enabling fraudulent claims of Input Tax Credit (ITC), particularly among registered work contractors.
The large-scale crackdown was carried out under the guidance of Commissioner State Taxes J&K, P. K. Bhat, and supervised by Additional Commissioner Enforcement and Administration Jammu, Namrita Dogra. To ensure a thorough inspection, 13 enforcement teams were deployed across the region to verify business records, scrutinise bill books, assess physical stock positions, and detect any discrepancies in compliance with the Goods and Services Tax (GST) law.
Over the past week, officials have investigated multiple cases of suspected violations by analysing transactional data and comparing it with physical inventory. The department has warned that any entity found involved in fraudulent ITC claims or other tax evasion practices will face serious legal consequences under GST regulations.
Authorities have stressed the importance of fair-trade practices and urged all taxpayers to ensure invoice-based transactions, report actual sales figures, and submit accurate GST returns on a monthly or quarterly basis. The department highlighted that it is continuously monitoring tax compliance through AI-driven analytics tools, including Business Intelligence and Fraud Analytics (BIFA) and the E-way Bills Portal.
These digital enforcement mechanisms generate red flag alerts for potentially fraudulent activities, allowing authorities to take swift action against defaulters.
The crackdown follows the department’s ongoing awareness campaign, which encourages consumers to demand invoices for their purchases. Officials emphasised that seeking a bill is a consumer right and also plays a crucial role in ensuring transparency in the taxation system.
With this latest operation, the J&K State Taxes Department has reinforced its commitment to clamping down on tax fraud, promoting financial discipline among traders, and ensuring that GST revenues are protected for the economic development of the Union Territory.
