Kulgam, Dec 23: Member of Parliament (MP), Anantnag-Rajouri constituency, Mian Altaf on Monday urged the government to provide a 100 per cent subsidy for residents of Jammu and Kashmir under the PM Surya Ghar Bijli scheme, citing the region’s harsh winters, where temperatures often plummet below zero.
Speaking to reporters in Kulgam after inaugurating a newly constructed road under the PMGSY scheme, Mian Altaf lauded the program, saying, “PMGSY is an excellent initiative, especially for remote areas where road connectivity was previously non-existent.”
Referring to the 7.5 km stretch upgraded in Kulgam, he said, “Earlier, this road might have been built by PWD and was likely damaged. Now, it has been upgraded, and people can drive smoothly at speeds of 70-80 kmph without encountering potholes.”
The MP added that Kulgam district has seen significant improvements in road infrastructure. “Wherever repairs are needed, I’m confident that the Deputy Commissioner and PMGSY officials will collaborate to address these issues promptly,” he said.
Responding to a question about the PM Surya Ghar Bijli scheme facing issues during winters in Kashmir, Mian said, “That is a valid point. People might hesitate to opt for this scheme due to its limitations in winter. I agree with the Electricity Minister’s statement that this is a great initiative. With this scheme, people won’t have to rely on grid electricity and can even sell surplus power back to the grid. However, I have requested that J&K residents receive a 100% subsidy under this scheme. I heard that initially, the scheme offered more subsidies, but now it has been reduced. I have asked for it to be fully sponsored because of the harsh winters and the significant electricity challenges we face here.”
The senior National Conference leader said that hydropower projects in Kashmir produce less electricity during winters, while those in Jammu send their power to the national grid. “These are fundamental issues that need to be addressed by both the state and central governments,” he said.
MP Mian was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner, Kulgam Athar Aamir Khan, officials of PMGSY and others.
