Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir House in Delhi is set to become the permanent address for the Fisheries Department of the Union territory to showcase its different fish varieties in order to expand the wider reach to the global customers, officials said.
They said J&K produces 80 percent of the total trout fish production in India.
In this regard, a high-tech outlet is under construction at the JK house in Delhi, which will serve as a showroom of the UTs fisheries department to promote its fish farming, officials said.
“We are expecting the construction to be completed by November. It is almost done but needs some final touch which is in the progress. It will showcase the wide base of fish production, especially the high quality trout, which is a very popular fish across India,” said Director Fisheries, Irshad Ahmad Shah.
Shah said JK House in Delhi is a place where people from different areas of the country and even foreigners visit since it is located in the area which is full of other state houses and foreign embassies.
“J&K produces 80 percent of the total production of trout fish. So an outlet in J&K House Delhi will introduce our wide base of fishes and fetch us a good market. The outlet will serve as a link to introduce and sell our product,” Shah told Rising Kashmir.
There are around two dozen varieties of fishes produced in different rivers, dams and other water bodies of Jammu and Kashmir with Common carp, Amur carp and the Schizothorax species or trout being the most common.
The director gives credit to the recently launched Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) that has come as a boon for the fisheries department.
He said the scheme has helped them to privatise the fish farming on professional lines. “There was a social stigma related to fish farming, however now things have drastically improved. We have come a long way by introducing different technologies that have been widely accepted by people,” he said.
