Srinagar, July 02: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has formed a committee to promote Srinagar as Global craft Destination.
As per the official communication, to elevate the status of Srinagar City status as a global hub for traditional crafts, the committee has been formed to spearhead initiatives aimed at enhancing the city’s visibility and appeal in the international craft market.
It said that the committee will be chaired by the Director of Handicraft and Handloom Kashmir who has been tasked with overseeing and coordinating efforts to promote Srinagar’s craft heritage globally.
The other members of the committee include the Director of Industries & Commerce, Kashmir; the Managing Director of Handicrafts & Handloom Corporation; the Deputy Secretary (N); and a representative from the DC Handicraft/Handloom department.
It also said that the primary objectives of the committee will include forging partnerships with prestigious international magazines such as Conde Nast, Outlook Traveler, and Travel and Leisure to showcase Srinagar’s rich cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship to a global audience, thereby boosting tourism and economic opportunities in the region.
It further said that the committee will engage with renowned curators and event organizers to plan and execute world-class craft exhibitions to highlight the exquisite craftsmanship of local artisans and boost cultural exchanges on an international scale.
Pertinent to mention, the city of Srinagar was designated as a World Craft City on June 23, becoming the fourth city in India to receive this recognition from the World Craft Council.
