Srinagar, Nov 28: Jammu and Kashmir has received Rs 5,835 crore in funding over the past five years under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) to modernize its power infrastructure.
This was stated by Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, while addressing Parliament on Thursday.
The Minister said that of the sanctioned amount, Rs 1,064 crore is allocated for metering projects, while Rs 4,771 crore is meant for reducing technical and commercial losses.
The government has also approved grant-based support of Rs 272 crore for metering and Rs 4,294 crore for loss reduction initiatives which brings the total grant support for Jammu and Kashmir to Rs 4,566 crore, the Minister said.
The funds are targeted at improving the operational efficiency of power utilities and to ensure a consistent and reliable power supply to residents.
Speaking on the progress under the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (Saubhagya) in Jammu and Kashmir, the Minister said that over the last five years and the current year, all willing un-electrified households in rural areas and poor urban households have been provided electricity to ensure broader access to power for residents in the UT.
Notably, RDSS, launched in July 2021 is to improve the efficiency and financial stability of power distribution utilities, reduce losses, and provide reliable electricity to consumers.
