The Department of Botany of Govt. Degree College Baramulla in collaboration with NSS on Saturday organised one day seminar on the title Organic Vegetables as Sustainable Agriculture.
The theme of the program was Respect The Earth Go Green. The event formally started with the inauguration of newly established organic farm in the botanical garden of the College which was inaugurated by the Principal Govt. Degree College Baramulla Prof. Dr. Muhammad Farooq Rather in the presence of dignitaries including Prof. Tariq Ahmad Chalkoo (Vice Principal), Mr. Harvinder Singh Sidhu Subject Matter Specialist from the department of agriculture, Mr Mubashir Sultan AEO and faculty members.
Speaking on the event Principal Prof. Muhammad Farooq Rather underlined the importance of organic agriculture and its greater role in catering to the quality and nutritional requirements of the populace.
The technical session of the program was conducted in New Conference Hall. The event began with the welcome address by Prof. Dr. Nuzhat Jabeen who welcomed all the attendees including guests, faculty and students.
Prof Tariq Ahmad Chalkoo in his inaugural address highlighted the scope of organic farming in the UT of J and K being an agrarian region with more than half of its economy supported by agriculture. He further added that organic agriculture has an immense potential for employment generation particularly for agri entrepreneurs.
Gracing the occasion, Mr. Harvinder Singh Sidhu Subject Matter Specialist discussed the various technical issues regarding setting of an organic farm, its organic certification and marketing. Agriculture Extension Officer Baramulla Mr. Mubashir Sultan informed the audience about various organic clusters established in the district.
He also talked about numerous success stories regarding organic farming at places like Chakla Uri, Saderbal, Janbazpora etc. He invited students to visit the organic farms in the district for a larger participation and awareness about organic agriculture.
Towards the end of the seminar, a memento was presented to Mr. Harvinder Singh Sidhu by Vice Principal Prof. Tariq Ahmad Chalkoo.
The event concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Massarat Geelani HeadDepartment of Urdu.
