Ganderbal, April 06: In a heart-wrenching incident from the Haknar-Gund area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, the body of a young girl who went missing on Saturday was recovered on Sunday from the power canal near Forbay-Fraw.
According to reports, the girl had suddenly disappeared from her home, prompting her family to launch a desperate search. Despite their efforts, they were unable to trace her whereabouts, following which a missing person report was lodged at the Gund Police Station.
Acting on the complaint, the police, SDRF Gund, and local volunteers initiated a coordinated search operation. Tragically, her body was later recovered near the power canal. Police officials shifted the deceased to the Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Kangan for post-mortem examination. After completing the necessary legal formalities, the body was handed over to the bereaved family.
The SDPO Kangan and SHO Gund also visited PHC Gund as part of the ongoing investigation. This tragedy comes just two days after another drowning incident in the same canal, where the body of a local youth, Javed Ahmad Khan—son of Abdul Wahid Khan and a resident of Haknar Gund—was also recovered. The back-to-back fatalities have sparked deep concern and alarm among the local population. Residents are urging the authorities to install protective fencing along both sides of the power canal, from Kulan to Sumbal, to prevent further loss of life. Meanwhile, police have launched a comprehensive investigation into both deaths to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the incidents.
