Ganderbal, Aug 27: A footbridge at Pathribal, connecting Ramwani village and Rayil in Gund rea of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, was damaged on Wednesday following a sudden rise in the water level of River Sindh triggered by continuous rainfall.Locals said the bridge was already in a deteriorated condition, and the surge in water flow caused further damage, disrupting connectivity for residents who rely on it for daily movement. “The water level in River Sindh has been rising steadily due to the ongoing rains. We have been demanding a proper bridge for years, but nothing has been done. Now the situation has worsened, and people are suffering,” said a local resident. The residents have urged the administration to immediately construct a new bridge over the Nallah Sindh to ensure safe connectivity and prevent further hardships. Meanwhile, in view of the prevailing inclement weather conditions and forecast of more rains in the Union Territory, the district administration has issued an advisory urging people to remain cautious. Authorities have strictly advised residents and tourists to avoid visiting riverbanks, nallahs and flood-prone areas, and not to cross streams, bridges, or causeways during heavy rainfall. People have also been asked to stay away from vulnerable slopes to minimize the risk of landslides. Tourists and trekkers have been directed to follow instructions of the local administration and police, while parents are advised to keep children indoors and away from water bodies. Livestock owners have been asked to shift animals to safer and higher locations. Tehsil-level Disaster Management Committees and field functionaries have been directed to remain in a state of readiness to deal with any eventuality.
