Srinagar, May 21: Scores of flower pots installed by the Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL) along the Riverfront at Rajbagh on the banks of the River Jhelum have allegedly been stolen by unidentified persons, triggering concern among residents and walkers who frequent the area.

The Rajbagh riverfront, developed under the Smart City project, has emerged as one of Srinagar’s prominent public spaces in recent years. The stretch, known for its landscaped walkways, decorative lighting, seating spaces and rows of flower pots, attracts hundreds of visitors daily, especially during mornings and evenings. The spot has become popular among walkers, joggers and families seeking a peaceful recreational space along the Jhelum.

Locals expressed shock over the disappearance of the flower pots, saying the theft has damaged the beauty and public utility of the area.

Officials said the stolen flower pots were part of the beautification efforts carried out by SSCL to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the riverfront. Residents alleged that despite significant public investment in the project, incidents of vandalism and theft continue to affect public property.

Chief Engineer of SSCL, Qayoom Kirmani, said the matter has come to the notice of the authorities and action is being initiated.

“I was informed by my staff about the incident and I immediately sent officials to the spot. We are taking up this matter with the police for registration of an FIR,” he said.

Kirmani said this was not the first incident of theft targeting Smart City infrastructure.

“In fact, even our manhole covers were stolen earlier by unknown persons. I don’t know where these thieves come from. We hope the authorities will take the matter seriously,” he added.

The incident has sparked criticism from citizens, who said public assets created for the benefit of people must be protected. Many urged authorities to increase surveillance and install more CCTV cameras along vulnerable stretches of the riverfront to prevent such incidents in future.

Several visitors also stressed the need for public cooperation in safeguarding civic infrastructure, saying vandalism and theft ultimately affect the city’s image and public convenience.
