Pahalgam, also known as Pahalgom, world renowned picturesque tourist destination, is situated near Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. The name “Pahalgam” originates from the Kashmiri language, meaning “village of shepherds.”

 

Pahalgam is a world famous tourist destination and hill station, attracting visitors in huge numbers from across the globe. 

 

 The town is situated on the banks of the Lidder River at an elevation of 7,200 feet (2,200 meters) above sea level, offering a serene and tranquil atmosphere.

 

Pahalgam is located approximately 45 kilometers (28 miles) away from Anantnag, making it easily accessible. 

 

 The region is renowned for its extensive trekking trails, offering opportunities for trekkers to explore the breathtaking Himalayan landscapes. 

 

Pahalgam serves as a delightful recreational getaway, catering to the diverse preferences of all types of tourists. When you visit Pahalgam, you can indulge in a wide range of activities. In order to assist you during your trip, some of the top tourist attractions in and around Pahalgam that are popular among the visitors are listed below:

 

Baisaran hills :Just 5 km from the main town Pahalgam , Baisaran, also known as “Mini Switzerland. It is situated at an altitude of around 2,438 meters above sea level and is renowned for its picturesque beauty and serene atmosphere.

 

It is surrounded by towering pine forests and snow-capped mountains, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The meadow is carpeted with lush green grass, creating a tranquil and refreshing ambiance for visitors.

 

Pahalgam Golf Course: It is situated at an altitude of around 7,200 feet (2,200 meters) above sea level, surrounded by the breathtaking Himalayan mountains and lush green meadows.

 

This golf course is spread over a vast area and offers nine holes, with an 18-hole layout for playing 18 holes. It is one of the oldest golf courses in Jammu and Kashmir and has a rich history dating back to the British colonial era. The course was originally established by the British in the early 1900s and has been a popular destination for golf enthusiasts ever since.

 

 

Aru valley : Aru Valley is a beautiful tourist destination approximately 12 kilometers distant from Pahalgam. It is surrounded by lush green meadows, snow-capped peaks, and pristine forests. The valley is formed by the confluence of the Aru River and the Lidder River, which further enhances its natural beauty.

 

The valley is known for its serene ambiance and is a perfect retreat for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. Visitors can indulge in various activities like trekking, hiking, and horse riding. The meadows of Aru Valley are ideal for picnics and leisurely walks, allowing visitors to soak in the tranquility of the place.

 

 

Betaab valley : Located at a distance of 15 km from Pahalgam Betaab Valley, also known as the “Hajan Valley,” is a breathtaking tourist destination. It is named after the Bollywood film “Betaab,” which was shot extensively in this picturesque valley.

 

 The valley is known for its pristine beauty and tranquil atmosphere, making it a popular spot for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts.

 

The valley is also a hub for various recreational activities. Adventure enthusiasts can engage in activities like trekking, horse riding, and camping. The verdant meadows provide ample opportunities for picnics and photography, allowing visitors to create beautiful memories in the lap of nature.

 

 

Chandanwari : Situated around 16 kilometers from the town of Pahalgam, Chandanwari is known for its scenic beauty and serves as a popular starting point for the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage to the holy Amarnath Cave.

 

The name “Chandanwari” translates to “sandalwood” in Hindi, and it is believed that the place got its name from the abundance of sandalwood trees that once grew in the area. 

 

 

 

Tulian Lake : Tulian Lake is a stunning lake located in Pahalgam, nestled between the Pir Panjal and Zanskar mountain ranges. Situated at an elevation of 3353 meters, it is a favorite destination for trekkers and camping enthusiasts. The trek to Tulian Lake begins from Pahalgam, covering a distance of 16 kilometers and passing through the charming Baisaran. Trekkers can set up their camps at the lake and indulge in the breathtaking vistas of the snow-covered Himalayan peaks. For those interested in trekking, pony riding is also available.

 

Sheeshnag Lake: Sheeshnag Lake, located near Pahalgam, is a breathtaking sight measuring 0.7 km in width and 1.1 km in length. This enchanting lake holds great significance as it is associated with Sheshnag, and it is situated at an elevation of 3658 meters above sea level, approximately 27 km away from Pahalgam town.

 

During the winter months, Sheshnag Lake is covered in ice, but by June, it unveils its captivating beauty.

 

Lidder River: The Lidder River is a prominent river that flows through the picturesque town of Pahalgam in the Kashmir Valley. It originates from the Kolhoi Glacier, located at an elevation of approximately 4,000 meters in the Kolhoi Peak of the Himalayas. The river meanders through lush green meadows, dense forests, and snow-capped mountains, creating a stunning landscape.

 

The river is known for its crystal-clear waters, which appear turquoise in certain stretches. Its serene beauty attracts tourists and nature enthusiasts who visit Pahalgam to witness its scenic charm. The Lidder River is also a popular spot for trout fishing, particularly for the prized brown trout.

 

Lidderwat: Lidderwat is a picturesque camping site situated along the banks of the Lidder River and serves as a popular base camp for treks in the region, including the trek to the Kolahoi Glacier.

 

 The camping site is situated at an altitude of approximately 9,000 feet (2,700 meters) above sea level, offering pleasant weather and stunning views.

 

Tarsar lake: Tarsar Lake is situated at an elevation of approximately 3,962 meters (13,000 feet) above sea level. The lake is known for its stunning natural beauty, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, lush green meadows, and dense forests.

 

Tarsar Lake is part of a popular trekking route in the Kashmir Valley, known as the Tarsar-Marsar Trek. This trek takes you through breathtaking landscapes, including pine forests, high mountain passes, and serene meadows. The trek usually starts from the picturesque village of Aru in Pahalgam and covers a distance of around 30 kilometers (18.6 miles).

 

 

Marsar lake : Marsar Lake, also known as Marsar Tal, is a high-altitude alpine lake situated near the Tarsar Lake and is often combined with it to form the popular Tarsar-Marsar trek.

 

Marsar Lake is known for its pristine beauty and remote location. It is nestled amidst the towering peaks of the Kashmir Himalayas, surrounded by verdant meadows, and fed by glaciers and snowmelt. The lake is characterized by its emerald-green waters, which create a mesmerizing contrast against the rugged mountain landscape.

 

Kolahoi Glacier: The Kolahoi Glacier is a notable glacier located in the Pahalgam region. It is one of the largest glaciers in the Kashmir Valley and lies at an altitude of approximately 4,700 meters (15,400 feet) above sea level. The glacier is named after Mount Kolahoi, a prominent mountain peak in the area.

 

It is the main source of water for the Lidder River, which flows through the Pahalgam valley. It is surrounded by stunning snow-capped peaks, making it a popular destination for trekking and mountaineering enthusiasts.

 

 

Amarnath Cave: The Amarnath Cave is a significant pilgrimage site situated at an altitude of approximately 3,888 meters (12,756 feet) in the Himalayas, the cave is renowned for its association with Lord Shiva, a major deity in Hindu mythology.

 

The cave is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva, where he revealed the secret of immortality to his consort, Goddess Parvati. Inside the cave, there is a natural stalagmite formation that is revered as the Lingam, symbolizing Lord Shiva. The lingam waxes and wanes in size with the changing phases of the moon, which adds to the mystique and spiritual significance of the site.
