Bandipora has long been a hidden gem for trekkers seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life. Recently, a one-day trek to Datewass has emerged as a popular choice among both amateur and seasoned adventurers alike, drawn by the allure of lush green valleys and breathtaking mountain vistas.
The trek to Datewass, also known as Dadewass, offers a rejuvenating retreat for those craving a breath of fresh air. Tucked away in the foothills of the Harmukh mountain range, this small yet enchanting valley is a source of glacial freshwater streams that meander through Bandipora and Ganderbal districts, including the renowned Nallah Arin.
For locals like Yousuf Mir , a middle-aged tribal residing in Datewass, the surge in trekking enthusiasts is a welcome sight. “We haven’t seen this much rush before,” he said, reflecting on the increased foot traffic in the valley. As he tends to his cattle and prepares to move to higher pastures, Yousuf notes the growing trend of people seeking solace in the mountains.
Accompanied by a special pass from the Army, the tribals traverse the rugged terrain with ease, facilitating hassle-free pasturing across the mountains. Meanwhile, trekking enthusiasts like Tanveer, who leads a group from the nearby Gundpora village, marvel at the influx of newcomers exploring the region. “In my ten years of trekking, it’s rare to see so many amateurs scaling these mountains,” he observes.
The allure of Datewass lies not only in its natural beauty but also in its historical significance. Once a bustling hub for lumberjacks, the valley has a rich past dating back to the early 2000s when it served as a vital wood source for the government. Despite the decline in activity after the lumberjacks departed, Datewass remains a treasure trove waiting to be discovered.
Bandipora, with its diverse landscape and topography, serves as a gateway to other scenic destinations, including Lal Marg-Mohan Marg, the base of the majestic Harmukh mountain.
Recent efforts by government officials to promote tourism have shed light on lesser-known destinations like Gurez, attracting attention from both tourists and celebrities like Akshay Kumar and Bollywood Director Onir. Yet, challenges persist, with locals advocating for improved infrastructure, including an all-weather road tunnel to alleviate accessibility issues during the harsh winter months.
In Datewass, as the tribals prepare for the seasonal migration to higher grounds, opportunities for economic empowerment emerge. Cashless trade flourishes as villagers exchange goods and services, while demand for ponies and guides surges among trekkers eager to navigate the rugged terrain.
Mohd Yasir, a resident of Sirander village, highlights the untapped potential of adventure tourism in Bandipora, emphasizing the need for sustainable development initiatives. With proper infrastructure and support, the region holds promise for fostering economic growth while preserving its natural beauty.
As the trekkers have begun exploring Datiwass, the village of Sirander, which serves as their base camp, has experienced a positive impact on its business. Trekkers conveniently park their vehicles in the village and purchase necessary supplies from local shopkeepers before embarking on their two-hour trek to the scenic Datiwass.
During the second wave of COVID-19, Datiwass gained prominence as lockdown measures disrupted daily life and people sought solace in nature. A group of local youths visited the area and shared their experiences and photos on social media, revealing the hidden gem’s beauty to the wider public.
The stunning landscape of Datiwass captivated netizens, and by 2023, it had become a popular destination for adventure enthusiasts. Photos and videos of its picturesque scenery went viral across Kashmir, drawing even more visitors.
Datiwass, known for its breathtaking views and serene environment, offers a perfect getaway for adventurers. Its accessibility allows for a full exploration within a single day, making it a preferred destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The area features a variety of activities such as hiking, photography, and nature walks, catering to outdoor enthusiasts and providing a refreshing retreat in the heart of Kashmir.
Though the journey to Datiwass is off-road, the adventure is worth it. However, the growing popularity has highlighted the need for improved infrastructure to ensure safe and comfortable access. Local resident Zahid Ahmed said, “Datiwass is a treasure, but better roads and facilities could make it even more enjoyable for visitors.” Another local, Shameem Bhat, added, “With the right infrastructure, Datiwass could become a top tourist destination in Kashmir.”
Investing in infrastructure will not only enhance the visitor experience but also support the local economy, providing new opportunities for the community and ensuring that Datiwass remains a cherished destination for years to come.
