Srinagar, Mar 28: Member of Parliament (MP), Baramulla, Er Rashid on Friday raised serious concerns over “exorbitant” airfares in Kashmir, saying that air travel in the valley remains costly throughout the year.
Speaking in Parliament, Rashid said while airfare hikes are often justified during festival seasons or emergencies, in Kashmir, the situation is different. “Kashmir remains in an emergency for 12 months,” he said, adding that high airfares are a persistent issue.
He pointed out that airfare surges occur during every season. “As the tourist season starts in March, the fares increase. Then, during winter, due to snowfall, ticket prices double,” he said. Calling for regulation of airfare, he urged authorities to ensure affordability, particularly for common people who travel mostly during emergencies.
Sharing an example, the AIP Chief recalled an incident from 2012 when he was an MLA. “Two Bengali workers in my constituency fell into a well and died. To transport their bodies, we had to pay five to six times the normal airfare,” he said, stressing that airlines should not exploit passengers in times of tragedy.
He further criticised the high prices of food and beverages at airports, calling them “unjustifiable”. “A cup of tea costs Rs 100 outside but is priced at Rs 1,000 inside the airport,” he said. He further urged authorities to address the heavy workload of airline staff and ensure better working conditions.
Expressing concern over the treatment of passengers at airports, Er Rashid said, “It often feels like a terror atmosphere. A common man should feel like he is going to travel, not as if he is being held captive.” He urged airport staff, security personnel, and authorities to be more humane and cordial toward travellers.
The MP requested the government to introduce a regular helicopter service for cut-off areas like Karnah, Machil, and Gurez, which remain inaccessible for six to seven months due to heavy snowfall. “If a regular helicopter service is introduced, it will be a great relief for the people of these areas,” he said.
Concluding his speech, Er Rashid urged the government to regulate airfares, improve airport facilities, and introduce measures to ease travel for the people of Kashmir.
