Jammu, Aug 07: In a significant move to develop interest of students towards observation skills of Science and Astronomy, the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) organised a first of its kind ‘Night Sky Watching Event’ at Sports Training Centre-Base Camp, Nagrota here tonight. As per a statement issued here, Ranjeet Kumar from Jammu and Kashmir Science Communicator Network (Chief Coordinator of Jammu Division) was the Resource Person. While displaying a fabulous show, the Resource Person motivated the students and inculcated in them the interest towards various branches of astronomy. Apart from the knowledge of frequent terms used in Astronomy, the students were given the knowledge of Telescope, Various parts of Telescope, How to set Telescope to view moon and planets and used Laser pointers to show various Constellations. While addressing the students, the Resource Person said moon craters are depressions on the lunar surface, formed by the impact of meteoroids, asteroids, and comets, adding these craters are a result of impacts, where the impacting object’s kinetic energy is transferred to the lunar surface, causing it to be ejected and leaving behind a bowl-shaped depression. “The moon’s lack of an atmosphere and geological activity contributes to the preservation of these craters over billions of years,” added the Resource Person. He threw light on Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, Cygnus, Aquila and Bootes Constellations and informed students about prominent stars of the Constellations, their names and time taken by light to reach on Earth from these stars. The students participated in the event enthusiastically and enjoyed every bit of it. The Resource Person and the students extended thanks to the Director General Youth Services and Sports, Anuradha Gupta for providing them opportunity to be part of this unique event.
