Ganderbal, Jun 02: Senior Congress leader Dr Karan Singh on Monday visited the revered Kheer Bhawani Temple in Tulmulla Ganderbal, on the annual festival. After paying obeisance at the temple, he reviewed the arrangements made for the event and expressed satisfaction over the preparations.
“The arrangements made by the administration and the Dharmarth Trust are commendable. I hope devotees will arrive in good numbers to participate in the Mela,” Dr Singh told Rising Kashmir during his visit.
Addressing the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Dr Singh condemned the violence and expressed grief over the loss of innocent lives. “Some misguided people are bent on disrupting peace. The recent attack has not only claimed lives but also dealt a severe blow to Kashmir’s peak tourism season,” he said.
Dr Singh said tourism in Kashmir had been witnessing a historic surge, with over three crore tourists expected to visit the region this season. “From five-star hotels to shikara walas and local artisans — everyone was benefiting from the booming tourism. This attack has harmed crores worth of economic activity,” he said.
Emphasising the spiritual and scenic significance of Jammu and Kashmir, he urged both devotees and tourists not to be deterred. “I appeal to the people to participate in the Kheer Bhawani Mela and the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. Jammu and Kashmir is truly a paradise on earth — there is no other place like it,” he said.
When asked whether the Pahalgam attack has impacted tourism, the Congress leader acknowledged the setback. “Yes, the incident has badly affected tourism. That’s why I am appealing to the tourists and yatris to continue visiting Jammu and Kashmir. Their presence is the strongest response to those who want to spread fear,” he added.
The Kheer Bhawani Mela, one of the most significant religious gatherings for Kashmiri Pandits and witnesses participation from thousands of devotees across the country.
