Jammu, May 3: As part of the ongoing Saptahik Rangdhara series organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL), the acclaimed Dogri play “Aadmi te Chuhe” was staged Saturday at Abhinav Theatre, Jammu, to an appreciative audience.
Shri Brij Mohan Sharma, Principal Secretary, Department of Culture, was the Chief Guest for the occasion. He presented a memento to the performing group in the presence of Padma Shri Balwant Thakur, Sonali Arun Gupta (Additional Secretary, JKAACL), and Dr Javaid Rahi (Divisional Head, JKAACL Jammu), commending their artistic contribution. In his address, he lauded the efforts of JKAACL in promoting regional language theatre and providing a platform for talented artists.
The play, originally written by John Steinbeck and translated into Dogri by Dr Sudhir Mahajan, was presented by the Hill Thespian Theatre Group. “Aadmi te Chuhe” tells the contemporary tale of two migrant field workers, Jaggu and Lori. Jaggu, portrayed as intelligent but cynical, and Lori, a strong but slow learner, arrive at a farm in search of work. United by their dream of one day owning land, their friendship is both moving and fragile.
Lori’s innocent wish to care for rabbits, mice and pups’ contrasts with Jaggu’s role as his guardian and closest companion. Their shared dream appears within reach when Khemu, elderly, one-handed farm worker, offers to help them purchase land. However, a tragic accident abruptly ends their aspirations, powerfully reflecting the unpredictability of life and the vulnerability of dreams.
Neeraj Sethi brought intensity and nuance to the role of Jaggu with a commanding stage presence. Sunil Sharma delivered a deeply moving performance as Lori, portraying his innocence and emotional fragility with great sincerity. Pradeep Sharma impressed as the wise and compassionate Khemu, anchoring the moral core of the narrative. Javed Gill (Boss/Sulemaan), Abhay Rajput (Bobby), Neha Sharma (Bobby’s wife), and Aman Sangral (Heera) all contributed convincing performances, with Sangral also serving as Assistant Director.
