Ganderbal, Dec 23: A segregation shed constructed at Chenner area of Kangan in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district has turned into a dumping with locals urging authorities to act forthwith in the larger interests of residents.
Despite being set up by the government after spending a good amount, the shed as per locals of the area has remained defunct for the past two years. Residents complained that the abandoned facility has become a heaven for stray dogs, posing a significant health and safety risk to the community. “This plant was meant to process waste and improve sanitation, but it has become a nuisance instead,” a local resident lamented.
The shed has resulted in the severe hardships for the people in the area, as the accumulation of unsegregated waste has created environmental and public health concerns. The residents have urged the concerned authorities to take immediate action to restore the functionality of the plant and address the growing issues caused by its neglect.
“We appeal to the administration to intervene and ensure the plant is repaired and made operational at the earliest,” another local said.
Block Development Officer (BDO) Kangan, Amarjeet Singh said that there is a court issue regarding the segregation shed at Chenner and measures are being considered to address it. He further mentioned that efforts are underway to improve cleanliness in the area
“The issue of segregation shed in Chenner did not arise during my tenure. It dates back to the previous BDO’s tenure. That is why work on the shed has not commenced yet, but I am hopeful that the issue will be resolved soon,” he added.
