Srinagar Dec 01:In an innovative move to modernise the traditional shikara ride experience, Uber has launched Uber Shikara, a service that blends the cultural heritage of Dal Lake with the convenience of modern technology. The initiative allows tourists and locals to book shikara rides seamlessly through the Uber app, offering a fresh and accessible way to explore one of Kashmir’s most iconic attractions.
Initially introduced with a fleet of eight shikaras, Uber Shikara offers an hour-long ride on Dal Lake and can accommodate up to four passengers. The service allows customers to book rides in advance, with options available from 12 hours to 15 days ahead, providing flexibility for both locals and tourists. The pricing adheres to the government’s official rate card for shikara rides, ensuring transparency and eliminating any ambiguity. Notably, Uber has waived commission fees on these bookings, making it a favourable arrangement for local shikara operators.
Prabhjeet Singh, President of Uber India & South Asia, commented on the launch, saying, “At Uber, we are always looking to make mobility magical and effortless. Uber Shikara is our humble attempt to blend technology and tradition to give a seamless experience to travellers for their Shikara ride. We are proud to create this iconic experience, enhancing accessibility and uplifting tourism in the breathtaking landscape of Kashmir.”
The new service has been well-received by local shikarawalas, who view it as an opportunity to modernize the traditional ride experience for tourists. “This is a positive development. We consider it a great opportunity to reach a wider audience and increase our earnings,” said Nazeer Ahmed, a local shikarawala.
Wali Mohammad, President of the J&K Shikara Union, expressed similar sentiments: “This is our first collaboration with Uber, and we’re happy that it follows government-approved rates, leaving no room for bargaining. It’s a win-win for everyone, as we won’t have to pay any commission to Uber.” He added, “this initiative will greatly enhance the experience for tourists and make Kashmir an even more attractive destination.”
Tourists have also expressed their excitement over the new service, highlighting its convenience and ease of use. “The launch of Uber Shikara is a great development, particularly for tourists visiting Srinagar. It will allow tourists to pre-book their shikara rides with ease and help them plan their itinerary more effectively,” said Tanya Gupta, a tourist from Delhi.
Ruchica Tomar, Director of Communications for Uber India & South Asia, remarked, “Dal Lake is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Srinagar. We’re thrilled to bring the magic of the shikara ride to the Uber app, blending Kashmir’s rich tradition with modern technology.” She further emphasized that the service would streamline operations for shikarawalas by providing advance notice of bookings, which would help them better plan their day. “This service will help shikarawalas know exactly where to find tourists 12 hours in advance, ensuring a better experience for everyone,” she said.
Ravi Kumar, a visitor from Madhya Pradesh, added, “This service makes it so much easier to explore Dal Lake. The convenience of booking in advance ensures we can make the most of our time here, without the hassle of negotiations or waiting.”
The launch of Uber Shikara comes at a time when Kashmir is witnessing a significant surge in tourism. According to the Tourism Department, over 28 million tourists, including 35,254 international visitors, have visited the valley between January 1 and November 30, 2024.
The launch of Uber Shikara aligns with the company’s broader strategy to expand its footprint in India. With a presence in 125 cities across the country, Uber’s entry into the shikara market in Srinagar is part of its efforts to diversify services and reach new regional markets.
