New Delhi, Sept 12 : Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury passed away on Thursday due to pneumonia.
Yechury was admitted to the AIIMS in Delhi on August 19, 2024. He had been first admitted to the emergency ward and then shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
“Sitaram Yechury CPI(M) General Secretary no more. He was admitted in AIIMS,” CPI(M) leader Hannan Mollah told ANI.
Sitaram Yechury was a prominent Indian politician who held a seat in the CPM politburo for 32 years and served as the party’s General Secretary from 2015. Additionally, he represented West Bengal in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament, from 2005 to 2017(ANI)
J&K CPI(M) pays tributes to Sitaram Yechury
Srinagar, Sept 12: The Jammu and Kashmir State Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) has paid heartfelt tributes to Comrade Sitaram Yechury, the party’s General Secretary, who passed away today at AIIMS, New Delhi, following a brief illness. Yechury, a prominent figure in the Left movement and a renowned Marxist ideologue, joined the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) in 1974 and was elected as its national President. He joined CPI(M) a year later and became a leading force within the party.
Known for his academic excellence, Yechury secured first-class degrees in both his undergraduate and post-graduate studies in economics and played a significant role in the student movement at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where he was thrice elected as President of the JNU Students’ Union.
Joining CPI(M) in 1975, Yechury was arrested during the Emergency for his political activities. He was elected to the Central Committee of the party in 1985 and ascended to the Central Secretariat in 1989, eventually becoming a member of the Polit Bureau in 1992. In 2015, he was elected General Secretary of CPI(M) at the 21st Congress, a position he held until his passing. Throughout his leadership, Yechury played a pivotal role in shaping the party’s political stances and was instrumental in fostering international relationships and solidarity with anti-imperialist movements. He served as the Editor of the party’s weekly publication, People’s Democracy , for over two decades and was a prolific writer, critiquing Hindutva in his notable works, What is this ‘Hindu Rashtra’? and Communalism vs Secularism .
Yechury was a distinguished parliamentarian, serving two terms in the Rajya Sabha from 2005 to 2017, where he was recognized as the best parliamentarian in 2017. He was also a key player in the formation of the INDIA bloc, a coalition of secular opposition parties.
