JAMMU, Mar 10: Amid heated exchanges in Assembly, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today responded to concerns about the controversial fashion show held at the famous skiing resort of Gulmarg during the holy month of Ramzan. The event, which has sparked widespread criticism for allegedly hurting religious sentiments, was organised by a private entity in a private hotel, with no involvement from the government at any stage.
The Chief Minister, who is also the Leader of the House, clarified that the fashion show was part of a four-day event organised on March 7 by a private entity. He emphasised that the government had neither granted permission nor provided any financial or logistical support for the event, nor did any government infrastructure or officials participate. “If permission had been sought from the government, it would not have been granted,” he stated.
Addressing the public outcry, Abdullah acknowledged the valid concerns raised by the people, particularly regarding the timing of the event during the holy month of Ramzan. “The images I have seen show a complete disregard for local sensitivities, and that too during this holy month,” he said. He further emphasised that such an event was inappropriate not only during Ramzan but at any time of the year, given the cultural and social ethos of the region. “I completely agree that such an event should not have taken place during Ramzan, and I would go a step further and say that it should not have been held at any time of the year,” he added.
The Chief Minister assured the Assembly that the administration had been in constant communication with local authorities, and an inquiry into the matter was promptly initiated. Preliminary findings have already come to light. “We are examining whether any legal violations occurred,” Abdullah said, promising that if any laws had been breached, strict action would follow.
In response to public anger and concerns about the nature of the event, Abdullah reiterated, “There was no government involvement in this event. Had the matter been brought to our notice beforehand, we would not have permitted it.”
