Kulgam, Jul 22:
The tranquil villages of Manzgam in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district were struck by a sudden and heavy downpour, resulting in flash floods that inundated the residential areas. The intense rains on Saturday afternoon caused local streams to swell, leading to water entering some residential houses in the villages of Korel, K.B Pora, Watigam, Watoo, Asnoor, and Tangmarg, all falling under the DamhalHanjipora subdivision.
Bashir UlHasaan, Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Noorabad, stated that while there have been no significant damages reported, water has entered a few residential houses in some villages. An administrative team, accompanied by SDPO DamhalHanjipora, is currently conducting a thorough assessment of the affected areas.
The flash floods, believed to be triggered by a cloud burst in the upper reaches, have not only impacted residential areas but also entered orchards in Manzgam, adding to the region’s woes.
Local resident YawarNazir reported that the surge in water levels caught villagers by surprise, leaving them on edge. In a precautionary measure to minimize potential impact, authorities swiftly evacuated people from their homes.
Reports indicate that the flash floods caused damage to the walls of the local higher secondary and middle school in K.B. Pora. However, there were no human casualties or major damage to houses reported, bringing some relief amidst the chaos.
