Nafi Javaid from Kulgam emerges as a leading tech expert, raising awareness about the dark side of technology and online scams.

In an exclusive interview with Rising Kashmir’s reporter Younus Rashid, tech expert Nafi Javaid says the addictive nature of gambling applications stems from their visually appealing graphics and the thrill of earning money with a single click. He said that these apps captivate users, particularly young boys, who are lured by the false promise of changing their fortunes, only to end up losing their hard-earned money.

RK: Could you tell us about yourself and your journey as a tech influencer?

Nafi: My name is Nafi Javaid, and I hail from Kulgam district. Since childhood, I have been deeply interested in technology. In 2021, I started my tech channel to create content around tech-related concepts. My goal has always been to educate and spread awareness, particularly about the misuse of technology.

RK: Lately, online gambling has become a pressing issue. What are your thoughts on this transition from offline to online gambling?

NAFI: Gambling is not a new phenomenon. Previously, it was mostly offline, and its harmful effects were evident. Many families were destroyed due to offline gambling. However, the shift to online platforms has made it more dangerous. Now, gambling happens through mobile phones, making it more addictive. Unlike offline gambling, where people know about the gambler’s habits, online gambling allows anonymity. No one knows when someone is addicted, and it can be done anywhere, even in private spaces like a car or bedroom.

RK: Why do you think online gambling is so addictive?

NAFI: There are a few reasons. Firstly, the anonymity removes social stigma. In offline gambling, people had to find secluded places to gamble. Now, they can do it discreetly on their phones. Secondly, the in-game experience is highly engaging. The visually appealing graphics and the thrill of earning money with just a button press lure people, especially young boys.

Besides, social media platforms flood users with gambling ads, often endorsed by celebrities and influencers. This further tempts the youth to try their luck. Unfortunately, 99% of people lose in gambling, whether online or offline. The algorithms of these apps are designed to exploit users. Initially, they let users win small amounts to hook them, but as they invest more, they start losing, leading to a vicious cycle of chasing losses.

RK: Do you think people are aware of the risks of online gambling?

NAFI: Most aren’t. Many young boys believe they can change their destiny through these apps, but they don’t realize they’re falling into a trap. Some are driven by greed, others by helplessness. We’ve received numerous messages from people who got addicted and faced financial ruin. Some even earned money on fake apps but couldn’t withdraw it because the entire online gambling segment is unregulated.

RK: What role do you play as a tech influencer in addressing this issue?

NAFI: As a tech influencer, my responsibility is to spread awareness. I’ve created multiple videos educating people about the dangers of online gambling. However, I believe this issue requires collective action. Every responsible citizen who has the power to speak should step forward.

RK: Can technology help combat online gambling, particularly in regions like Kashmir?

NAFI: Developing software to prevent online gambling is challenging. In some states like Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, where suicide cases related to gambling surged, the government banned online gambling entirely. I believe education alone cannot solve this problem. In Jammu and Kashmir, we must consider implementing a ban before more families are destroyed and suicide cases rise.

RK: What message would you like to convey to youth & govt?

NAFI: To the youth, I say: don’t fall for shortcuts. Use your money wisely. Instead of gambling, invest in learning real skills or starting a small business. Even if you face losses, you’ll gain valuable lessons. No one has ever become a millionaire through gambling.

I urge the govt to take strict measures to ban online gambling and betting in Jammu and Kashmir. It’s time to act before this menace spirals out of control.
