In a remarkable transformation, the Baramulla district in north Kashmir has emerged as the face of a new white revolution, witnessing a significant surge in dairy production post the abrogation.
Today, over 5.5 lakh liters of milk are being produced on a daily basis in district Baramulla, marking a momentous shift from its milk-deficient past.
An official at the Animal Husbandry department in Baramulla proudly shared that just four years ago, the district faced scarcity in milk production. However, a determined community has turned the tide, making Baramulla a leading district in the dairy sector.
He said that the fertility of the Sopore and Pattan areas has been instrumental in achieving this feat.
“Years ago, Baramulla was a milk deficient district while as today it is a leading sector in milk production. Today Baramulla is producing 5.5 lakh liters of milk on daily basis,” he said.
Praising the district’s progress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June this year, acknowledged the region’s extraordinary efforts in his monthly radio program, ‘Mann ki Baat.’
He commended the women of Baramulla, exemplified by Ishrat Nabi, a graduate from Nehlpora, Pattan, who established her successful dairy unit ‘Mir Sisters Dairy Farm.’
“With approximately 150 liters of milk sold daily, Ishrat’s venture serves as a beacon of inspiration,” PM Modi said in his radio program.
The official at Animal Husbandry said that under the Integrated Dairy Development Scheme (IDDS) of the Animal Husbandry Department, the government extends 50 percent subsidies on equipment necessary to establish dairy units, as seen in Ishrat’s case.
“This initiative empowers progressive farmers to invest in livestock and machines for optimal results,” he added.
Wasim Enayat, another progressive farmer from Sopore, is another successful example of a dairy entrepreneur, selling over 200 liters of milk each day. Abid Hussain Mir from Nillah, Pattan, is also thriving in the dairy sector with the support of the Animal Husbandry Department.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized the impact of these endeavors, as Baramulla district now boasts more than 500 dairy units within the last two and a half to three years.
“The Baramulla district has witnessed the establishment of more than 500 dairy units over the past two and a half to three years, turning Baramulla into a shining example of the potential that lies within every part of the country,” PM Modi said in Mann Ki Baat.
The Animal Husbandry Department’s various schemes, including KCC and HADP, continue to empower forward-looking farmers and drive the white revolution forward.
Officials at Animal Husbandry said that the residents of Baramulla district should visit their offices and take advantage of the schemes, aiming to make the district a shining example of the white revolution.
“The department aims to assist people in becoming entrepreneurs rather than job seekers through these initiatives,” the officials added.
