Bandipora: Asiya Akbar, a 35-year-old entrepreneur from Nusoo Bandipora. She has set an example of self-reliance and sustainability through innovative farming practices. By cultivating vegetables and mushrooms on rooftops, she earns over ₹50000 above per month and inspires others especially unemployed women to follow her path.
“I earn over 50,000 above from this rooftop farming by cultivating mushrooms and vegetables,” said Asiya Akbar.
Asiya began her journey four years ago by starting a mushroom farming business. Gradually, she expanded into vegetable cultivation using rooftop spaces because she lacked land. Her efforts have not only benefited her financially but have also created employment opportunities for others in her community
“Due to the lack of land, I thought, why not use the roof space of my house for farming? So, I first started a mushroom business and have been cultivating for four years. Later, I began compound vegetable farming, which has been very beneficial. I have created work for myself and others,” said Asiya Akbar.
Her husband has always supported her in this work, and he is now also engaged in the same work.
“My husband has always encouraged and supported me in this work, and now he works with me in rooftop farming,” said Asiya.
She further urged unemployed youth, especially women, to shift their focus from job seeking to job creation.
“I appeal to the unemployed youth and especially women to take initiatives and become job creators instead of relying on others for employment,” said Asiya Akbar
Her work has become a source of inspiration for many in the region, showcasing how innovation in agriculture can transform lives and promote self-reliance.
