Srinagar, Feb 16: Athletes from across the country gathered at Sonamarg on Sunday for the 9th National SnowShoe Championship-2025. It would be for the second time that the picturesque town will host the national-level winter sports event.
The championship, set to be inaugurated on Monday, will feature competitions in both male and female categories across junior and senior divisions, concluding on Tuesday.
Organised by the J&K SnowShoe Association in collaboration with the Department of Tourism and under the auspices of the SnowShoe Federation of India, the event aims to promote Sonamarg as a premier winter sports destination in the country.
“It is only the second time a national-level winter sports event is being held in Sonamarg. Our goal is to establish Sonamarg as the next winter sports hub of India. So far, we have been successful in our efforts, and we hope to see even greater results in the future,” said Mir Muddasir, President of the SnowShoe Federation of India.
Earlier, the participating teams were flagged off from TRC Srinagar by renowned athlete Riyaz Wani, alongside J&K SnowShoe Association official Khan Gulzar. The championship has drawn around 110 athletes from 15 to 17 states and union territories, showcasing the growing popularity of snowshoeing as a competitive sport. The event not only highlights the athletic prowess of participants but also underscores the potential of Sonamarg as a venue for winter sports, further boosting tourism and local economy. As the athletes prepare to compete, the scenic slopes of Sonamarg are set to come alive with energy and excitement, reinforcing the region’s reputation as a hub for adventure and winter sports enthusiasts.
