Artisan honoured with UT level award for exceptional Kani work skills

Ganderbal, Mar 02:  Ghulam Mohammad Magray, a resident of Kachan in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district has been bestowed with the prestigious UT Level Award in recognition of his outstanding proficiency in Kani Work, an age-old craft renowned for its intricate Willow Wicker designs.
Magray’s unwavering dedication and expertise in Kani Work have earned him the esteemed first prize, which includes a cash reward of Rs 50,000. His commitment to preserving and advancing this traditional art form has not only garnered him acclaim but has also shed light on the cultural richness of the region.
The recent awards ceremony celebrated Magray’s remarkable contributions to the craft, acknowledging his talent and relentless pursuit of excellence. His exceptional skills have not only earned him accolades but have also created avenues for further exploration within the realm of traditional craftsmanship.
In addition to the monetary prize, Magray will receive a monthly pension of Rs 8,000 upon reaching the age of 60, a testament to his lifelong dedication and invaluable contribution to the craft.
Magray’s active involvement in the Karkhandar Scheme has played a pivotal role in promoting the art form and empowering aspiring artisans, particularly young women, within the community. Serving as a master trainer, he has generously imparted his knowledge and skills, paving the way for their professional growth and economic independence.
As a gesture of appreciation for his tireless efforts, Magray is set to receive Rs 1,20,000 over the span of six months, highlighting the government’s unwavering commitment to championing and acknowledging the endeavors of local artisans.
Expressing heartfelt gratitude to the government for its steadfast support, Magray underscored the transformative impact of such initiatives on his personal and professional journey. He remains steadfast in his resolve to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of the region, ensuring its legacy endures for generations to come.
