Srinagar, Dec 04: National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Sunday defeated NIT Surat by 30 runs in the second (Group D) match and entered the quarterfinals of the All India Inter-NIT Faculty and Staff Cricket Tournament played at S B City Cricket Ground Nagpur.
The tournament is being hosted by Visvesvarya National Institute of Technology (NIT) Nagpur and 20 NITs from across India are participating in the mega event.
With this win, the NIT Srinagar team led by Captain Faisal Irshad (Dy. Registrar admin), qualified for the quarterfinals of the tournament, while NIT Surat and NIT Bhopal (from group D) were eliminated from the tournament.
Playing first, NIT Srinagar scored 122 in 16 Overs. For NIT Srinagar, Dr Tanveer Rasool scored 49 and remained the highest scorer of the match.
In reply, NIT Surat scored 92/6 in 16 Overs. For NIT Srinagar, Tanveer Hussain was the highest wicket-taker with 2 wickets in his quota of 3 Overs. All other bowlers contributed by being miserly in giving away runs while leaving little room for opposition batsmen to score.
Earlier, NIT Srinagar played its first match against NIT Bhopal. NIT Bhopal won the toss and decided to bowl first.
In their stipulated 16 Overs, NIT Srinagar scored 124 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. Suhail Baba was the highest scorer for NIT Srinagar with 52 runs. Chasing a modest total of 125, NIT Bhopal were bundled out for 96 in 15.2 Overs.
Congratulating the team for making their place in the quarterfinals, Director NIT Srinagar Prof (Dr) Rakesh Sehgal said it is a proud moment for the entire institute.
“Sports activities are part of the vibrant academic system and we need to focus on all aspects. Regular participation in sports activities teaches us to plan ahead and see through the consequences of our acts,” he said.
Prof Sehgal appreciated the efforts of Captain Faisal Irshad (Dy Registrar admin), for making the NIT Srinagar team proud and hoped that team will bring the trophy home.
Institute’s Registrar, Prof Syed Kaiser Bukhari extended his greetings to NIT Srinagar’s cricket team. “We are proud of all the players representing our NIT Srinagar at Inter-NIT Tournament,” he said, adding, “To support faculty, staff, and students on campus, we have developed State-of-the-art facilities for sports and will continue to expand our activities in the future.”
