Jammu, Mar 21: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu, located in Vijaypur, has achieved a milestone by becoming the first hospital in the region to provide Vitrectomy Services to patients in need. The hospital’s Ophthalmology Department successfully performed its first vitrectomy surgeries, marking a major advancement in specialized eye care.
“AIIMS Jammu is now the first hospital to offer such advanced surgical care in vitreo-retina speciality,” its Director Dr Shakti Gupta told Rising Kashmir, adding that the institute is committed to providing state-of-the-art medical services.
The first vitrectomy procedure was successfully conducted by Dr Nitin Kumar, Associate Professor of Ophthalmology. Another patient, diagnosed with vitreous haemorrhage following trauma, underwent a successful vitrectomy under the expertise of Dr Ridham Nanda, Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology.
Highlighting the hospital’s growing capabilities, Dr Bhavani Raina, Head and Additional Professor of the Ophthalmology Department, played a key role in meticulously planning and executing this initiative.
Dr Shakti Kumar Gupta, Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu, praised the dedicated efforts of the ophthalmology team. “This achievement reflects AIIMS Jammu’s commitment to providing specialised healthcare services. By introducing vitrectomy procedures, we are ensuring that advanced ophthalmic care is now accessible to the common masses.”
He assured that vitrectomy surgeries will now be a regular part of AIIMS Jammu’s services, aligning with the institution’s mission to offer comprehensive, cutting-edge healthcare.
With this development, AIIMS Jammu aims to expand its ophthalmology capabilities, reducing the need for patients to seek specialised treatment outside the region.
