SRINAGAR, JUNE 10: In a meeting chaired by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, the Administrative Council approved the establishment of a dedicated Backward Classes Commission. This commission will facilitate reservations for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in Local Bodies, aligning with the Jammu and Kashmir Local Bodies Laws (Amendment) Act, 2024.
Key attendees at the meeting included Advisor Rajeev RaiBhatnagar, Chief Secretary AtalDulloo, and Principal Secretary Mandeep Kumar Bhandari.
The Commission’s mandate includes conducting empirical studies and investigations to ensure proper representation of Backward Classes in all Local Bodies before the upcoming general elections. Recommendations for proportional reservation for backward classes, both urban and rural, will be submitted to the Government, in accordance with amendments made in relevant acts.
The Commission’s tenure will span forty-five days from the date of publication of notification, aiming to implement OBC reservations in the forthcoming local body elections, in compliance with the directives of the Supreme Court.
