Srinagar, Nov 01: BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh on Wednesday criticized the Abdullahs and Muftis for their history of boycotting elections on a whim and then suddenly advocating for them.
In a strongly-worded statement, Chugh said that all elections in Jammu and Kashmir would occur in due course, once constitutional requirements are met.
Taking a dig at Omar Abdullah’s recent statements, Chugh pointed out the irony in political parties that had historically won elections by boycotting them. He highlighted past instances where elections were “manipulated” with minimal voter participation.
He went on to highlight the positive developments in Jammu and Kashmir, saying the UT’s is witnessing increasing stability and economic growth, which has transformed it into a prominent tourist destination. He attributed these positive changes to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the removal of the Article 370.
“Today the situation (in J&K) is absolutely calm and normal. It is a matter of pride for every citizen of Jammu and Kashmir because now the citizens there are living a life of peace and happiness,” he said.
The BJP leader said Omar Abdullah should have faith in democracy and the democratic system. “The Election Commission is a constitutional institution in the country. The decision on elections has to be taken by the EC,” he said, adding that the Bharatiya Janata Party is always ready for elections.
Chugh said the BDC and DDC elections were held in 2020 in which lakhs of people voted and more than 280 local representatives were elected democratically. “Lakhs of people had voted against the alliance and they clearly see their defeat in the future,” he said.
