Handwara, a small town located in the northern district of Kupwara, is quickly gaining recognition as a foodie destination. With the establishment of around 30 fast food restaurants by young, educated individuals in recent times, Handwara is now called “Restaurant Town.” Despite the absence of a culture of dining out for lunch or dinner, these eateries have been attracting a significant number of visitors on a regular basis.
Restaurant owners in the main town of Handwara have expressed their happiness with the growing success of their businesses. One owner, who has been associated with the industry for a long time, has witnessed a steady influx of customers to these food hubs. He attributed his restaurant’s success to the grace of God, as it consistently attracts a good number of people every day.
Sameer Ahmad Wani, the owner of a multi-cuisine restaurant in Handwara, recently established his food venture along with his colleague Ashiq Hussian. They aimed to create job opportunities for themselves and others, which they have successfully achieved. Many educated youth, like Sameer and Ashiq, have ventured into the food business to become self-reliant and create more opportunities in the town.
In this emerging restaurant town, new establishments are opening every month. The local community is actively participating in setting up their own restaurants, contributing to the growth of the culinary scene in Handwara.
Another restaurant owner, Ashiq Hussian, emphasized their commitment to maintaining high quality standards. He mentioned that they strive to provide the best possible dining experience to their customers, including families who visit the restaurant. Each restaurant in Handwara offers different styles of cuisine and unique qualities, making the town a diverse and exciting food destination.
The success of Handwara’s emerging food industry has brought economic benefits to the town. The influx of visitors to these restaurants has created employment opportunities for the local population. Moreover, the increasing number of eateries has sparked a sense of enthusiasm and entrepreneurship among young people, encouraging them to establish their own businesses.
The restaurant culture in Handwara marks a significant shift in the town’s dining habits. Previously, it was uncommon for people to eat out for lunch or dinner. However, the growing number of food establishments has changed this norm, with more and more residents and visitors opting to enjoy meals at these restaurants.
The rise of Handwara as a restaurant town showcases the potential for small communities to flourish in unexpected industries. The entrepreneurial spirit and determination of the educated youth has led to the creation of a vibrant food scene, attracting both locals and tourists. As Handwara continues to evolve as a destination for foodies, it is expected to contribute further to the town’s economic development and provide more opportunities for the local population.
Handwara has transformed into a bustling restaurant town, with numerous fast food establishments. The success of these ventures has brought economic benefits to the town and created employment opportunities.

With its unique culinary offerings and diverse styles, Handwara has become an exciting destination for food enthusiasts. The growth of the restaurant industry in Handwara highlights the potential for small towns to thrive in unexpected sectors, setting an inspiring example for other communities.
