Srinagar, May 10: The introduction of electric auto-rickshaws (E-Rickshaws) in Srinagar aimed at promoting eco-friendly transportation options has caused discontent among college students who rely heavily on these services for their daily commute.
Students allege that despite the touted benefits of E-Rickshaws, such as cleaner emissions and metered fares, the actual costs are significantly higher compared to traditional auto-rickshaws.
Sabreena Yousuf, a college student, expressed her concerns, saying, “Despite claims of fair pricing, the fares of E-Rickshaws are noticeably higher than those of traditional auto-rickshaws. As students on a tight budget, these increased costs are burdensome.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Iram Farooq remarked, “The idea of eco-friendly transportation loses its appeal when the fares become unaffordable, making it difficult for us to access transportation.”
Arshid Bhat, President of the E-Rickshaw Drivers Association, expressed concern over the overcharging by Trio auto-rickshaw drivers in comparison to E-rickshaw drivers. He said E-rickshaw drivers charge only Rs 10 per passenger for routes to Women’s College, SP College, Kothibagh, and Sangermal, whereas Trio auto-rickshaw drivers, who come in the morning, charge Rs 20 per passenger for the same routes.
“If any E-rickshaw driver is found overcharging, people should take their photo and send that to me. Strict action will be taken against them, including getting their registration cancelled,” Bhat said, adding that SSP Traffic would be informed and the autos of erring drivers could be seized if necessary.
