Srinagar, Sep 23: To strengthen the waste collection system in Srinagar city, the department of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is going to add more modern machinery.
A senior official of the department told Rising Kashmir that the funds for the procurement are available and the department has tasked the mechanical wing to speed up the procurement of the machinery.
The officer said that “150 hoppers, 10 vacuum cleaning, and 10 water sprinkler vehicles will be acquired for the department by the middle of next month.” He stated that in addition to these 200 bins, several dumpers will be installed throughout the city.
Chief Sanitation Officer (CSO) Srinagar Municipal Corporation, said, this machinery was sought during the “Swach Bharat Abhiyan” and the funds for this modern machinery are available and the same will be available with the department within a month.
The officer said that after the procurement of this modern machinery, there will be no problems in collecting waste in the city. He affirmed that on a routine basis, SMC employees collect more than 506 metric tonnes of waste per day for Srinagar city.
The department has already pressed 100 hopper vehicles with hundreds of employees to make Srinagar city neat and clean, the officer said, adding that the SMC has also launched the night cleaning shifts to avoid the inconvenience to the general population.
The department also said that there are several other projects under consideration regarding the betterment of waste disposal in the city.
Earlier, an official of Srinagar Municipal Corporation Srinagar said that “on a daily basis, the SMC collects 506 metric tonnes of waste from all wards of Srinagar.” The officer said that the department is collecting the waste from door to door throughout the municipal limits.
“SMC staff use a system of carts, hoppers, compactors, and vehicles to collect waste from homes and major sources of bulk waste each day. The sanitary landfill in Achan receives all of the collected trash.
Making Srinagar a clean, sanitary, and litter-free city is the SMC’s top priority. The department is now working hard to put its long-term strategy for integrated solid waste management into effect, CSO said.
The procurement of modern machinery will provide a major relief to the people of the city and the sanitation employees. The machinery will be in place so there will be no delay in collecting the trash from any part of the city, the officer added.
