Ganderbal, Aug 08: The Department of Zoology, Central University of Kashmir (CUK), organized a one-day workshop on “Beekeeping for Entrepreneurs” under IIC 5.0 calendar activities at Science campus Nunar here on Tuesday.
In his welcome address, Dean, School of Life Science and Head Department of Zoology, Prof M Yousuf, focused on the role of beekeeping entrepreneurship in India. He praised the contribution of all the faculty members in the smooth conduct of the event.
The expert lecture was delivered by Dr Parveen Bano, Associate Prof. Research and Training Centre for Pollinators, Pollinizers and Pollination Management, SKUAST-K. She highlighted the aspects of beekeeping being very attractive, lucrative and fascinating rural agri-horticulture-based entrepreneurship.
“It doesn’t need any sophisticated technology, high capital investment or infrastructure. It suits well in the integrated agricultural system as an allied activity to increase the economy of the farming community. The beekeeping industry plays an important role in creating employment opportunities among the rural masses,” she said.
Dr Parveen said the government is implementing various programmes to promote this industry. “Many government agencies extend incentives as well as marketing support for the bee-keeping units,” she said. She also highlighted the pre-requisites and importance of beekeeping in the country in general and J&K in particular.
Dr Abid Hamid, Head, Department of Biotechnology, Prof. Azra N. Kamili, Nodal Person, Department of Botany, and faculty members from the departments of Zoology, Biotechnology, Chemistry and Botany also participated in the workshop.
The organizers included Dr Ibraq Khurshid, Dr Mohammad Lateef, Mr Irfan Ahmed Noorani, Dr Javeed Ahmad Tantray, Dr Irshad Ahmad Ahangar, Dr Muzamil Bashir, Dr Hameem Mushtaq and Dr M Arif. The proceedings were conducted by Dr Javeed Ahmad Tantray.
