College Admissions Set to Cross 55,000: Sakeena

Aatif Qayoom

Srinagar, June 2: The Education Minister on Tuesday said Government Degree Colleges across J&K have recorded a significant rise in student admissions this year after the government introduced several measures to simplify and ease the admission process.

The minister said the new reforms have helped reverse the declining trend in college admissions witnessed over the past few years.

According to Sakeena Itoo, admissions in the very first round have reached 49,155 compared to 45,920 during the same period last year, showing an increase of more than seven percent.

She said the government expects the total number of admissions to cross 55,000 by the end of June. If achieved, this will mark nearly a 20 percent increase over the previous year’s enrolment figures.

Sakeena Itoo said the encouraging response from students reflects the success of the government’s efforts to make higher education more accessible, transparent, and student friendly across J&K.

“We remain committed to ensuring that every aspiring student gets an opportunity to pursue quality higher education,” the minister said.

She added that several decisions were taken to remove difficulties faced by students during the admission process and to ensure smoother access to Government Degree Colleges across Jammu and Kashmir divisions.

The minister further said the administration will continue taking steps aimed at strengthening the higher education sector and improving opportunities for students across J&K.

Officials believe the rise in admissions also reflects growing confidence among students and parents in the government education system. The increased enrollment is expected to strengthen the academic atmosphere in colleges during the current academic session.
