Baramulla, May 05: Police on Friday arrested two smugglers for their involvement in the cutting down of illicit forest timber in the Choolan area of Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
A police official said that Hakim Din, son of Faqir Mohd Sheikh, and Qadeer Ahmad, son of Hakim Din Sheikh, both residents of Choolan Kalsan Uri, were arrested for cutting down forest timber and selling it at higher rates.
During the operation, the police recovered about 40 cubic feet of illicit forest timber from the smugglers’ possession in Choolan Uri, he said, adding that a case has been registered under the sections of the Indian Forest Act in Police Station Uri and an investigation is underway.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of Shokat Ali-JKPS, SDPO Uri, and was assisted by Inspector Mohd Shafi, SHO Police Station Uri, he said.
Police have urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to illegal logging and smuggling to the authorities.
