Srinagar, Dec 27: A major tragedy was averted on Wednesday after security forces detected a suspicious object believed to be planted by terrorists along the Srinagar-Baramulla highway in the city outskirts, officials said.
The police officials revealed that traffic on the Srinagar-Baramulla road was suspended temporarily after a gas cylinder was detected on the roadside at Lawaypora along the busy highway during routine patrolling by security forces in the morning.
A bomb disposal squad was rushed to the spot which destroyed the suspected object through a controlled explosion without causing any damage, they said. Gauging the situation and keeping in mind the safety of people, traffic was immediately stopped and the area was cordoned off by security forces.
A senior Army officer told Rising Kashmir that traffic along the Srinagar-Baramulla National Highway was suspended and Police teams rushed to the spot. “Both Army and Police averted a major terror incident and destroyed the suspicious object. The Army stands by its commitment to keep Kashmir terror-free,” he said.
The traffic on the highway resumed. He said alertness and swift action of security forces averted any kind of mishap and prevented any disruption to routine lives.
Meanwhile, in view of the prevailing foggy weather conditions in Kashmir, security officers have been advised to exercise heightened vigilance. A senior officer said that following dense weather conditions, they have been directed to remain alert and take necessary precautions to ensure the safety and security of the region.
“The fresh SOPs aim to mitigate potential challenges posed by reduced visibility during the fog, ensuring that security measures remain robust in the interest of public safety,” he added.
