Srinagar, Apr 28: Senior Congress leader and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Dooru, Ghulam Ahmad Mir on Monday said that for the first time in the history of Jammu and Kashmir, without any announcement or appeal, people across the region, all castes and tribes, spontaneously responded and condemned the Pahalgam terror attack.
Mir said the tragedy at Baisaran, Pahalgam, was deeply condemned across every corner of Jammu and Kashmir, reflecting a collective sense of grief and outrage. “This is perhaps the first time in Jammu and Kashmir’s history that without any call or announcement, people from all backgrounds united in condemnation,” he said.
The Congress leader said that at the national level, the Indian government’s decision to call an all-party meeting to address the situation was timely and appropriate. “All political parties extended their full support to the government to improve the situation and safeguard citizens,” he said.
He said the national and regional parties agreed that the government should take whatever steps necessary to prevent such attacks. Mir, however, questioned how often condolences and resolutions would be passed without achieving real change.
“The steps taken post-2019 seemed more political than aimed at ending militancy (sic). Today, 140 crore citizens stand united behind the government, and politics should have no place in responding to such incidents. It is now the government’s responsibility to ensure that such tragedies are not repeated,” he said.
The MLA also pointed out that the language and messaging used during the attack indicated a larger agenda. “The aim was not just to kill innocent people but to spread division — separating Hindus, Muslims, children, and women. The country must unite against this divisive agenda,” he said.
Mir said the Congress Party immediately convened a Working Committee and Apex Party meeting, strongly condemned the attack, and appealed for national unity. “We must decide whether we want to advance the terrorists’ agenda or defeat it. The entire country supports the Indian government in taking strong, decisive action,” he said.
