Srinagar, March 09: The Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura has intensified its fight against the growing concern of substance abuse within the community and launched a series of specialized awareness sessions for vulnerable populations.
Officials said that these programs will be held in a collaborative effort between Department of Community Medicine, SKIMS, Soura and Department of Psychiatry, SKIMS Medical College and Hospital (SKIMS MC&H) Bemina that have been designed to educate the general public and SKIMS employees about the dangers of substance abuse and promote prevention strategies.
A SKIMS official said that the awareness sessions are aimed at understanding substance abuse, providing in-depth information about various substances, including drugs, alcohol, and tobacco, and their harmful effects on physical and mental health.
“It will identify the signs and symptoms of substance abuse, addiction and work for prevention and intervention,” the official said.
During the sessions, people would be educated on effective prevention strategies, including building resilience, coping with stress, and making healthy choices.
“People will be provided information about available treatment and rehabilitation resources and stress will be on early intervention,” the official said
The institute has targeted to reach diverse audiences, including young adults, vulnerable populations, and SKIMS staff, through tailored sessions.
The sessions will be held at different locations, including within the SKIMS campus and also at outreach locations within the wider community.
The official said SKIMS is working in collaboration with diverse sectors other than health, such as RTO, driver’s association and with local NGOs and other community leaders, to increase the effectiveness of the programs.
The initiative features interactive discussions and presentations by psychiatrists and Community Medicine experts, distribution of educational materials, confidential counseling services, and open discussion forums.
Substance abuse is a serious public health issue that requires a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach. Through these awareness sessions, we aim to empower individuals with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to make informed decisions, recognize early warning signs, and seek timely help.
