Kupwara, Jan 04: Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Langate, Sheikh Khurshid on Saturday staged a sit-in protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Kupwara against the administration’s “failure” to repair essential equipment.
Following in the footsteps of his brother, Member of Parliament (MP) Er Rashid, the MLA carried a damaged stabiliser from Lalbug Ganapora and highlighted the administration’s failure to repair the essential equipment, which had caused drinking water disruptions in the village.
Khurshid criticised the authorities for their inaction, saying that while district administration conducts multiple meetings aimed at improving public services, the ground reality remains different. He said the Lalbug Ganapora panchayat had spent Rs 23 lakh on a stabiliser transformer and water pump, yet these facilities remained non-functional for months.
“The stabiliser was defunct for a long period. Even after it was started, the mechanical department neglected its maintenance, leading to severe water supply disruption in the panchayat,” he told Rising Kashmir.
The MLA said that repeated requests to the concerned department were ignored, leaving him with no option but to stage a protest outside the DC office.
Following the protest, the issue was resolved. An employee from the mechanical department was designated to provide technical support, and the damaged stabiliser was replaced. “As a result, the water supply to the affected village has been restored,” Khurshid added.
Expressing his commitment to the people, MLA Khurshid said, “The residents have entrusted me with their votes, and I will always be at the forefront to address their concerns. I will go to any extent to fulfil their legal demands and ensure they get better facilities.”
