Srinagar, Dec 25: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday paid tributes to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his 100th birth anniversary, saying the late leader was committed to dialogue and peace in Jammu and Kashmir.
Mehbooba described Vajpayee as a statesman who prioritised diplomacy even during the most challenging times. “Despite the Kargil conflict and the 2001 Parliament attack, Vajpayee never abandoned the path of dialogue with Pakistan. His unwavering belief in talks over conflict set him apart as a true visionary leader,” she said.
The PDP chief praised Vajpayee’s foresight and his efforts to bridge gaps through peaceful means. “Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s determination to engage in diplomacy, even amidst adversity, demonstrated his deep conviction in peace as the ultimate solution,” she said.
Mufti also acknowledged the former PM’s support for the late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s “healing touch” policy, which brought significant relief to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Mehbooba credited Vajpayee for initiating confidence-building measures, including the opening of cross-border roads, which played a pivotal role in easing tensions in the region.
“Vajpayee’s endorsement of Mufti Sahab’s healing touch policy marked a new chapter for Kashmir. It gave people hope and a sense of belonging, laying the groundwork for a peaceful future,” she remarked.
Mehbooba added that Vajpayee’s vision of a united, peaceful India continues to inspire and guide efforts in Jammu and Kashmir today. (KNS)
