Srinagar, Dec 22: As Christmas and New Year celebrations approach, tourist bookings across Kashmir’s major destinations have surged, with nearly 90% of accommodations already reserved, according to the Tourism Department.
Gulmarg, a premier winter destination, has become the focal point for these festivities, with three-star and five-star hotels fully booked through December and into the first week of January.
Hoteliers and tour operators are optimistic about the rise in bookings. “The festive season has brought a wave of hope for the tourism sector,” said a hotel owner in Gulmarg. Other popular destinations like Pahalgam and Sonmarg are also witnessing high demand, with limited rooms available for last-minute bookings.
Tourism officials noted that during last year’s Christmas celebrations, Gulmarg hosted over 10,000 tourists, including a significant number of international visitors. This year, the numbers are expected to exceed previous records. To enhance the holiday experience, the Tourism Department is organizing a series of musical events featuring local and national artists at Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonmarg. Major tourist spots will also be adorned with festive decorations, including elaborate lighting, from late December until January 2.
Special events are scheduled to further enrich the festive atmosphere. The Institute of Hotel Management in Srinagar will host a celebration on December 23, followed by a program at Gulmarg on December 24. These events aim to attract visitors and showcase Kashmir’s unique winter charm.
However, some stakeholders have raised concerns over a slight dip in tourist numbers compared to 2022 and 2023. “While accommodation facilities have increased each year, the tourist influx has not grown proportionately,” said a hotelier. Despite this, the sector remains hopeful for a strong turnout during the New Year celebrations.
Gulmarg, renowned for its ski resort, continues to be the centerpiece of New Year festivities, attracting visitors from across the country and abroad. The destination’s snow-clad slopes and vibrant activities make it a favourite among winter holiday enthusiasts.
